It’s a landmark celebration this year marking Readipop’s two decade presence in Reading…

With over 4,000 people attending this year’s Readipop Festival, Readipop are in particularly celebratory mood as they announce that their 20th Birthday Party on Friday 26th October at South Street Arts Centre will be headlined by one of the highlights of the festival, Rowetta of Happy Mondays.

Readipop has been supporting new music talent from Reading since 1998 and continues to do so now in many ways from providing subsidised professional studios for current local successes The Amazons and Sundara Karma to providing discovery and development programmes for upcoming talent including Tabi Gazele, Ray Wills and Will Davey who will all play live at the party (Will as part of Rowetta’s band).

Readipop is throwing a birthday bash to celebrate the wealth of talent it has seen grow over the years, featuring an inter-generational roster of Readipop associated acts. Members of performing acts Rodney Cromwell (Saloon), Vienna Ditto, Kill Committee, Marcus Pearson and The Ady Baker Sound, all featured on the first Readipop CD produced in 1998 to promote the many exciting bands and artists hailing from Reading.

The (musical) cherry to top the birthday cake will be a special headline appearance from Rowetta. Rowetta is long-time member of infamous Mancunian indie heroes Happy Mondays and regular vocalist for Peter Hook & The Light and Hacienda Classical. She has even appeared on X-Factor with Simon Cowell describing her as “Amazing, but barking bloody mad”.

Rowetta’s live set at this year’s Readipop Festival was one of the highlights of the weekend for many who attended thanks to her incredible voice, song choice (including a memorable rendition of “You Got The Love”) and a brilliant full live band put together by Readipop and led by Grammy Award winning producer and UB40 bass player Don Chandler. The same band, who have all led local Readipop music projects, will reunite with Rowetta on 26th October especially for this special night.
