Broad Street, featuring the Grand Cinema

The Grand opened in Broad Street in 1911, opposite the Vaudeville Electric Theatre. The Grand was considered to be the classier of the two broad street cinemas. It would show brand new, high quality films from leading producers like the Vitagraph Studio of America. In contrast, the Vaudeville would often show films that were well over a year old.

Unfortunately for The Grand, it doesn’t seem like the people of Reading had need for their high-class offering and it closed in 1922. The Vaudeville continued to operate until 1957.
